since the debut album eight years passed by, in which gotan project published a second, no less great album, toured around the globe and served the elegant aesthetics of itheir performances visually («la revancha del tango live« , dvd/2005). besides the musicians founded interesting side projects. Eduardo makaroff created his own label, which brought several fantastic argentine tangoartists to Europe over the intervening years, including melingo and juan Carlo cáceres.
with its album title »tango 3.0« gotan project raised the bar surprisingly higher, because it suggests a further development of their earlier works with the new publication, a new dimension is reached, perhaps a ew perid.
but all this is not »tango 3.0«. gotan project stays true to their characteristic baselines of the past albums: dull/musty beats, cool elektrosamples, a stoic bandoneon and changing vocals, mostly however as randomly included clauses. It results in a nightly scenario, equally cool and heated, erotic charged - and nevertheless inaccessible. the musical representation of this atmosphere is the great art, which gotan project achieves far better than any competing project, and also «tango 3.0« contains these moments, for example in the in consecutive pieces «»mil milliones« and »do misterio« - the latter refined by the rough timbre of the already mentioned melingo.
on the other hand however there are some irritating tracks, which remain considerable shallow, not to say: nearly harmless and significantly more friendly, as if the tango had left the dark of night and the fogged night clubs. obviously: gotan project seem to see their »tango 3.0« also as a linkage with other genres. thus they set »rayuela« the like-charged novel of the left Argentine writer icon julio córtazar to music. the child choir, which is used in it, however matches the novel, not the atmosphere of electrotango - otherwise some beats get out of step of the tango-rhythm, some vocal parts (»mensajero") sound too friendly, nearly sweetish.
»la gloria« tries to connect tango and football, the two great argentine passions, sounds nearly stadium suited thanks to the harmless beatline, so that also gilles peterson, world music expert of the BBC, noticed that »tango 3.0« has to get along without the »same radical claim for pioneer debuts«. nevertheless peterson is enthusiastic and one comprehends his statement, that there are »only one handful of disks, which had such a great influence« to the audience. gotan project will confirm, perhaps consolidate, but not maximize the influence by »tango 3.0«.
